Our approach to applying fine finishes is always the same; keep the area clean, don’t rush and create something beautiful. Although the process of applying finishes such as Venetian Plaster or Micro Cement varies depending on the desired look and texture; it can be summarized into these four basic steps.
The foundation of a great Venetian plaster finish lies in meticulous surface preparation. This step involves thoroughly cleaning the surface to remove any dirt, grease, or existing coatings that might interfere with adhesion. Imperfections such as cracks, holes, or uneven areas are repaired and smoothed out.
A key aspect of this step is ensuring the surface is not only clean but also stable and ready to accept the plaster. Depending on the existing surface, a primer may be applied to enhance the bonding of the plaster. This stage is crucial as it determines the quality and longevity of the finish.
Once the surface is properly prepared, the next step is applying a base coat. This coat serves as the foundation layer for the Venetian plaster. The base application is usually a thicker layer that helps to level the surface and provide a uniform base for subsequent layers.
It's essential to apply this layer evenly and allow it to dry thoroughly before proceeding. The base layer's texture and color can influence the final appearance of the plaster, making this a critical step in achieving the desired aesthetic outcome.
This stage involves the actual application of Venetian plaster. Venetian plaster is a putty made from fired limestone mixed with water and colored pigments, creating a smooth, marble-like finish. This step requires skill and artistry, as the plaster is applied in thin, multiple layers using specific techniques to create the desired texture and depth.
Techniques such as layering, cross-hatching, or burnishing are used to achieve different effects. Each layer is allowed to dry before the next is applied, with careful attention to maintaining consistency in texture and color.
The final step is polishing the plaster to achieve its characteristic shine and smoothness. Once the final layer of plaster has dried, it is meticulously burnished using a special trowel or spatula. This process compresses and smooths the plaster, bringing out its natural luster and creating the depth and richness characteristic of Venetian plaster.
The degree of polish can vary depending on the desired sheen, from a soft satin to a high gloss. A protective sealant may also be applied to enhance durability and resistance to moisture and wear.
From surface preparation to the final polish, combine to create a stunning Venetian plaster finish that adds elegance and depth to any architectural space. The process, while demanding precision and care, results in a unique and luxurious finish that stands out for its artisanal quality and aesthetic appeal.
